Web Design Basics Part 1: Understanding the Brief

How you interpret the needs of your client will affect the end result you produce for their approval so it is important you and your client understand each other. It is also important that you don’t just roll out a design idea you had way back when to make another satisfied customer. Take time to get to know your design clients and treat them like individuals – because they are. They have their own ideas they want to have included in their design.

It might be common sense but trying to be as responsive to their initial ideas will lead to you having a fruitful relationship. It is their project after all.

Your responsibility at this stage is to get as much information from your client as you can. Your initial ideas should reflect your client and their company so maintaining your focus and not becoming overwhelmed by your initial ideas is a good start. Remember, your client has chosen you for this project because you are professional and you know your stuff so you should know the right questions to ask. An initial questionnaire for your client is your only tool at this stage. You can conduct this questionnaire in person, over the telephone or you can send your client a copy which they will return with all the right information (hopefully). (more…)

Introduction to Internet Marketing

There are so many ways to promote your business online which has given birth to different types of online marketing. You will most likely find that online marketing can be time intensive, very frustrating, confusing yet an unavoidable part of having a website or online business. I will go through some of the different types of marketing that there is and in further posts I will give you ideas, tips and tricks to help grow your business from having little online traffic or leads to start providing good results.

Well let’s get started.
There are several different types of marketing which include: PPC (Pay Per Click), SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Affiliate Marketing and Article Marketing.

Pay Per Click
Just as the name implies you pay for each click your advert receives. You first create and advert in for example Google Adwords, Yahoo or Bing. You then go about choosing what keywords you want to target for example if you are a Web Designer based in London you would target terms like Website Design London, Web Designer London and so on and lastly you set your price you are willing to pay per click and how much you are willing to spend per day. It can be daunting when you first start and you may not make much but with some research and plenty of time you could find this is a fast way to generate traffic and leads to your website if you have the money.

Web Development Basics Part 1: The Tools

Note: This series assumes you are knowledgeable in HTML

vim editor and code

Web development is a fun field to work in, it can also be one of the most difficult to break into and it is not always clear where to start. While the industry may be fun, it is also very fast paced and you have to willing to learn and re-learn things constantly, there is always better and more efficient technologies and practices to adopt and research.

One of the most common questions about web development is “What is the best language for coding?” to which the answer is none. There  is no “better” scripting language, just more suitable ones.  While at More Click Marketing I mainly develop in PHP, it is fast, open source and free, I dabble in other technologies such as Ruby-on-Rails and ASP.NET.  The most important thing to learn isn’t a language, it’s how to program.

What is web development? what is programming?
